There are no Sour Lemons
at Citrus
Los Angeles,California
A most charming restaurant hiding behind a row
of ficus trees on Melrose Avenue. The general manager escorted us to
our table under a large ecru's umbrella, as are all the tables in the large
airy room. The color of the umbrellas gives the whole room a wonderful soft
hue, most becoming to the patrons. Really we all left the wrinkles at the
door!
Hugo is our waiter, I hope you
are lucky enough to get him, and as he presents the menu he also suggests
having a Kettle-one martini, "any thing you wish." He also suggests
appetizers that we can share when we tell him we want to sample different
things. It was fun trying the array of delicious appetizers such as the best
calamari I have ever had, crisp and tasty, not oily at all, a really nice
mound on a beautiful plate. By the way all of the china, glassware and silver
are all top of the line and add so much to the charm of our luncheon.
Porcupine Crab Cakes with tomato mustard seed sauce was great, and my how the
crab cakes looked like a sea urchin with lots of fine potato shreds that
really did look like a tiny porcupine - and it tasted great besides. Sautéed
Scallops with onion rings and chardonnay sauce was elegant. Now we sit back
and relax while Hugo suggests wines to go with our lunch.
Chilean Sea bass with black
chanterelle crust and onion sauce is an experience not soon forgotten. Chef
Daniel Rossi can do more with fish than can be imagined, and also with
everything he touches. Beef Paleron Steak Bourgonone sauce is a meltingly
tender filet mignon with delicately garlic flavored potato curie on the side.
Fettuccine with lobster and leaf greens with oriental sauces is not only
exciting but surprisingly very comforting. The flavor all complimented each
other and the tasty sauce somehow makes it almost homey. Chef Rossi will
probably kill me for suggesting such a thing as "homey" pertaining
to his cooking.
Wonderful vintages of chardonnay,
cabernet and merlot are served with all this great food. We are sure we cannot
eat another thing, but we did not recant with the persuasive Hugo. We end up
with the crunchy napoleon with butter scotch sauce and a small plate of sorbet
and ice cream. Hugo also recommended a beautiful lite, blush port wine to
accompany our treats, we did not refuse, and it was the most delicious
ambrosia to ever grace my lips. the perfect cappuccino was also served to top
off a most wonderful experience, a lunch with such class, it distinguished
itself above all the rest. need I say more, it was simply divine.
Citrus also has a menu composed by
you, the customer. A four course with dessert for $55 including a
choice of three in each category with appetizer & dessert.
